To follow this tutorial you will need:
Paint Shop Pro 8 or 9 - HERE
JASC Virtual Painter 4 - HERE
A photograph of your choice
(all photographs used in this tutorial are copyrighted to myself)

INSTRUCTIONS

Open your photograph. This is the photo I will be using.

Original Picture

In your layer palette, right click on the background layer and click on promote to raster layer as shown in the screenshot below.

Promote Layer

Crop the photograph to remove any areas of background that you don't want. Depending on how you are going to use the final image, resize as necessary. If you have resized your image, go to Adjust, Sharpness, Sharpen. This is what my cropped image now looks like.

Cropped Image Now

Go to Effects, Plugins, Virtual Painter, Virtual Painter 4. Your location may differ to mine.

Plugin Location

Click on filter and select Gouache.

Filter Settings 1

Then click on material and select one of your choice. I have chosen to use Paper (Smooth).

Filter Settings 2

Finally, click on adjust and set all of the sub-settings to subtle.

Filter settings 3

Click the blue tick to apply the filter. Your image will now look something like this.

Finished Image

Again crop any distracting areas out of the image. If you want to apply a nice frame then feel free to do so. Otherwise save as a JPEG and you are done.
